Sanctuary Housing

Sanctuary Housing exists to provide short-term shelter to individuals and families in our community who are experiencing a temporary hardship or homelessness.

To provide sanctuary is to provide safety and refuge. It is a privilege to be able to use our space in this manner.

One component of Sanctuary Housing is our partnership with the Women's Homeless Initiative (WHI). WHI is a consortium of congregations and ministries in the Capitol Hill neighborhood working together to offer a warm and safe place to sleep for women who are homeless. On the first, third, and fifth Sundays of the week, 20 women eat dinner at The Table and then are welcomed into the sanctuary at Open Door Fellowship where they spend the night. Overnight volunteers ensure a safe and welcoming environment for women and provide a refuge from the harsh street environment. Email Jamie if you are interested in volunteering overnight with the Women’s Homelessness Initiative.

A second component of Sanctuary Housing is providing emergency shelter to individuals and families. During the months of the year when we do not have mission groups using our dorm space, we are able to use that space for anyone in need of temporary shelter. This is provided at low or no cost and Sanctuary Housing residents are encouraged to get involved with other ministries of Open Door and attend church at Open Door Fellowship if they don't already. Our hope is to provide a broader community, coupled with a safe place to stay.
